Amalfi Coast

Italy · Cliffside towns stacked above a turquoise sea

All destinations

The Amalfi Coast is a 50-kilometer stretch of coastal road where lemon groves cling to terraced hillsides and pastel-colored towns spill down cliffs toward the water. It's dramatic in the most literal sense — every drive along the SS163 delivers a new switchback view.

Positano gets the postcards, but Amalfi town itself, Ravello up in the hills, and the quieter fishing village of Praiano all offer their own version of the same coastline without quite the same crowds or prices.

Highlights

Path of the Gods
A cliffside hiking trail between Bomerano and Nocelle with uninterrupted sea views — best walked in the cooler morning hours.
Ravello's gardens
Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo sit high above the coast with terraced gardens built for exactly this panorama.
Limoncello, at the source
The coast's Sfusato lemons, grown on shaded terraces, are the base for the region's best limoncello — try it straight from a family producer.
Boat over bus
Ferries connect Amalfi, Positano, and Salerno directly across the water, skipping the coastal road traffic entirely.
Best time to visit

Late May to mid-June or September delivers warm, swimmable weather without the August crowds and prices.

Getting there

Fly into Naples (NAP), then take a ferry from Naples or Salerno directly to Amalfi or Positano — faster and more scenic than the coastal bus.
