Dubrovnik

Croatia · A limestone-walled old town on the edge of the Adriatic

All destinations

Dubrovnik's old town is entirely enclosed by defensive walls built between the 12th and 17th centuries — nearly two kilometers of continuous fortification that still stands, and that you can walk in full for a view over both the terracotta rooftops inside and the open Adriatic outside.

The marble-paved main street, Stradun, gets crowded by mid-morning, especially on days when cruise ships are in port. Come early, stay late, or step a few streets back into the old town's quieter residential alleys, and the same city feels almost empty.

Highlights

City walls at sunrise
The full 1,940-meter loop takes about two hours; walking it before 8am avoids both the heat and the crowds.
Cable car to Mount Srđ
A short ride up the hill behind the old town for a panoramic view over the walls, the harbor, and the nearby islands.
Lokrum Island
A short ferry ride away, this forested island nature reserve has a botanical garden, a saltwater lake, and far fewer people than the old town.
Old town after cruise-ship hours
Most day-trippers leave by early evening — dinner after 8pm gets you the atmospheric, quieter version of Stradun.
Best time to visit

Late May to June or September delivers warm, swimmable weather without the July–August cruise-ship peak.

Getting there

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is about 20 minutes from the old town by taxi or shuttle bus.
