Ella

Ella is a small hill-country town built around tea, and almost everything worth doing here happens on foot or by rail: terraced tea plantations climb every visible slope, and the train line connecting Ella to Kandy is routinely ranked among the most scenic rail journeys anywhere, running past waterfalls, tunnels, and the Nine Arch Bridge without a single major road in sight.

At roughly 1,000 meters elevation, Ella is noticeably cooler than the coast, which is part of the appeal — mornings here are misty and quiet, a sharp contrast to Sri Lanka's beaches a few hours south.

Highlights

Nine Arch Bridge

A colonial-era railway viaduct that trains still cross several times a day — arrive between crossings to have the jungle setting mostly to yourself.

Ella Rock

A half-day hike along the rail line and through tea estates to a viewpoint over the whole valley — no guide strictly required, but easy to lose the trail without one.

A working tea factory tour

Smaller estates around Ella and nearby Haputale offer short tours ending in a tasting, with far fewer visitors than the big-name plantations.

The Kandy–Ella train

A roughly 6-hour ride through tunnels, waterfalls, and tea country — book an observation-car seat well in advance in high season.

Best time to visit

January to March offers the driest, clearest weather in the hill country, avoiding both monsoon seasons.

Getting there

Fly into Colombo (CMB), then either the scenic train via Kandy (6–7 hours) or a private car (4–5 hours) to Ella.
